Formerly Tatume Mix

Vining- Summer Squash- cv Tatume Mix (C. pepo)
This is a mixture of our dark green, light green, yellow and white oval squash.  The parent of all these lines is Tatume, a very resilient green pumpkin from the southwest U.S. which we liked because of it's productivity even during hot and dry weather and resistance to insects and disease.  Several years ago we crossed mother Tatume to the best tasting of our summer zucchini squash.  These delightful oval squash are the children of Tatume.  The vines are productive and the squash is widely acclaimed for slicing and grilling when young.  They mature into an interesting assemblage of striped and mottled oval pumpkins which can be baked or used in hearty vegetable soups in native tradition.

Vining Summer Squash

Packet plants 5 hills (20 seeds)

Plant squash in mid to lat May when the soil is warm.  Summer squash is harvested young and immature while the skin is tender often beginning to bear before 60 days after sowing the seed.

A hill is simply a cluster of seeds planted together.  You can dig a hole with a shovel and prepare the ground by adding compost and an organic non burning fertilizer to the mix and refill he hole and then poke 3-4 seeds each an inch or so apart into the soft soil so they are covered by an inch of soil.  Sometime soil is actually mounded a few inches higher than the ground an it is actually a hill.  This is done in areas where soil stays wet or it doesn’t drain well.  This is not a common condition with our sandy soils.  The hills should be 3-4 feet apart.  Vining squash will generally sprawl over the ground,  so plant accordingly.

C. pepois zucchini and will cross withacorn, delicate and dumpling and Halloween pumpkins.  They will have angular stems.    C. moschata is summer avocado squash and will cross with cheese and butternut squash which usually have a stem that flares out toward the fruit.  Lagenaria species is a very strong vining squash with white flowers.  Summer squash is well known and can be prepared many ways.

Squash is harvested for seed when mature and the skin become tough.   Cut it open and scoop out the seed.  In water you can separate the orange strings from the seed.  Rinse the seed and dry on newspaper or screen until the seed breaks when bent.  Squash flowers are insect pollinated so unless you can isolate the pollinating flowers squash will cross.  Research techniques of hand crossing the flowers if interested or grow just one variety of squash.
