Vining Summer Squash
The Italian edible gourd is used when it is about 8 inches long and 2 inches across. It is prepared like any summer squash but usually sautéed in olive oil with onions and hot pepper, herbs for flavoring. Otherwise it is rather bland. The fruit will mature into a yard long bottle gourd, something that looks like a baseball bat and makes an interesting fall decoration. Grow the robust vines on an archway and allow the gourds to hang down from the top and grow straight or find a place where it can just ramble along the ground. The vines bear night blooming flowers which are generally pollinated by moths.
