NEW - Mid-East Basil plant

This basil does not actually have a name. It is a landrace basil, which suggests the original seed was from a farmer.

Here is what is definitely true. This variety was “donated” as a “red basil” from Iran, given to the US Embassy in Tehran in the early 1960’s. This occurred during a period of political upheaval with competing ideologies, religious affiliations and the two divides in Iran became clear and deep.

Here is what I would like to believe: Despite whatever differences existed, the simple exchange of seeds among contemporaries as a gift prevailed for a greater good.

Anyway, this is a pretty amazing basil. Though it was dry farmed, it was lush and full this past year and late to bolt.
